LOCATED IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC, just east of the south-central coast of China, the island of Taiwan comprises most of the land area of the nation known officially as the Republic of China-also called Nationalist China, Free China, the Republic of China on Taiwan, and very recently by some, the Republic of Taiwan-but most often referred to as just Taiwan.
